Vision APIs with a free tier — no credit card required.
Only four of the 10 leading image-tagging APIs let a developer make real API calls without entering a payment method. The three hyperscaler clouds all require a credit card even for their free quota. The three frontier multimodal LLMs all require pre-payment to access the API (Claude.ai and ChatGPT chat are free; the APIs are not). The smaller, focused providers — Clarifai, Imagga, Cloudinary, plus Google Gemini's AI Studio tier — are the only paths into a no-card prototype.
Free-tier access without a credit card · by provider
| Provider | Free tier (no CC) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clarifai | Yes | Community tier with documented monthly operation quota. |
| Imagga | Yes | 1,000 images/month free, no card required. |
| Cloudinary AI | Yes | Free tier (25 monthly credits) does not require a card. |
| Google Gemini (vision) | Yes | Google AI Studio free tier; no card for documented low-rate quota. |
| Google Cloud Vision | Partial | $300 free credit covers Vision usage, but a GCP billing account (with card) is required to enable. |
| AWS Rekognition | Partial | AWS Free Tier includes Rekognition quota, but AWS account creation requires a card. |
| Azure AI Vision | Partial | F0 free tier exists but Azure account requires a card. |
| Anthropic Claude (vision) | No | API requires pre-paid credits. (Claude.ai chat is free; the API is not.) |
| OpenAI GPT-4o (vision) | No | API requires pre-paid balance. (ChatGPT free tier is not the API.) |
| Hive AI | No | Sales-call gated; no self-serve free tier. |
"Yes" requires a documented free quota that an outside developer can use without entering a credit card. "Partial" means a free quota exists but card entry is required to enable. Cells re-verified monthly. Methodology →
Why this matters
The presence or absence of a no-card free tier is the single biggest predictor of how fast a developer can build a working prototype with a given API. Teams routinely choose the no-card provider for the proof-of-concept and then re-architect later — which means the no-card providers capture disproportionate early-stage mind-share even when the eventual production stack moves elsewhere.
What counts
- Yes — a documented free quota exists and can be enabled without entering payment information.
- Partial — free quota exists but a credit card is required to activate the account.
- No — no self-serve free quota for the API; payment or sales contact required.
